This unit outlines some of the main teaching methodologies used for English language training, indicating the origins of these methodologies, and their strengths and weaknesses. It provides a good understanding of how language teaching has evolved and then focuses on ESA as the recommended approach to teaching. The ESA approach outlines 3 phases:
- an engagement phase used to get students thinking and talking in English
- a study phase in which the target subject matter is covered
- an activate phase, in which the students can experiment and be creative with the language that they have learnt.
The unit gives valuable advice on when and how the teacher should correct the students and on how to construct useful lessons on given subjects using the ESA approach. It also gives many examples of techniques to use during each phase of a lesson, and provides clear guidance on which lessons would be more suitable for which levels.
