This chapter discusses the different types of tests that foreign students or foreigners, in general, can take depending on their motivation for learning English. It also provides the different types of tests teachers can administer to gauge the students' English language ability at different stages of the language programme/classes. There are also progress tests that can be administered at the different stages to reinforce and check the understanding of the students' and if the information disseminated is retained. While it is clear cut that practice tests are designed and given to prepare students' for the external exam, a diagnostic test is not so clear cut. I used to think that it is a topical test but now understand it as a test given at the start of the course, similar to a placement test and will allow the teacher to understand better what needs to be prepared to assist the students' in the difficult area.
