Unit 4 discusses the four present tenses. More specifically, it explains their construction, usages, common errors, and teaching ideas for the Activate stage. The present simple form (ie. I study) is used when describing habits, permanent settings, stories or directions. The present continuous (ie. I am studying) explains an action is happening, places emphasis on frequent events, or describes actions over time. The present perfect (ie. I have studied) describes finished actions with an unspecified timeframe or previous actions with present results. Finally, the present perfect continuous (ie. I have been studying) is used for ongoing actions that have not yet been completed. The variety of ways to say something in the present tense is unique to English and makes learning these forms difficult for ESL students. Therefore understanding these constructs is necessary for successful teaching.
