This is how our TEFL graduates feel they have gained from their course, and how they plan to put into action what they learned:
This unit showed me that text books, while a staple in the classroom, are not to be relied upon point-by-point for everyday instruction. There are obvious advantages to having a textbook handy, being that they have been tested and tried, but there can be disadvantages, as well. It was interesting to see that adaptation of the textbook was suggested to fit each class and their individual needs. This honestly never would have occurred to me, if not for this lesson. This lesson was about the two productive skills, speaking and writing. Since both are very different, the lesson spoke at length about each. It also focused on what is similar in productive activities--fluency and accuracy. It noted when accuracy should be the focus and when fluency should be the focus. It gave guidelines for how to create creative speaking and writing activities to engage the students, and at the end mentioned the use of games in the ESL classroom.
