Unit 13 of this course is about teaching pronunciation and phonology. It includes teaching intonation, teaching stress, and teaching sounds.
The most frequently used intonation is rise-fall for statements and special questions, and fall-rise for general questions or for statements when you expect your interlocutor to give you some information or reply. Intonation can be taught by using nonsense words, gestures, humming or drawing arrows on the board.
To help learners come to an understanding of the pronunciation of English International Phonetic Alphabet is used. Peer dictation, visuals, tongue twisters and your own mouth are considered to be the best tools for teaching pronunciation.
There are some basic rules for teaching word stress, like stress on the 1st syllable in most 2-syllable nouns. But we can't rely on those rules too much, because of a lot of exceptions.
