The forms of past tense are: Past simple, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. Past simple is formed by adding 'd/ed' or by using did/did not. Was/were is used with the verb 'to be'. It gives order for actions in the past and when the time is given. Past Continuous is formed by using was/were/were not with the present participle ending in -ing. It is used for interrupted past actions, for actions without a time, descriptions, or to express actions which began before that time and then continued on. Past Perfect is used when describing a past event, but some other past event happened before it. It is formed with the verb 'had' and the past participle of the verb. This form is used when the past actions are completely finished. Past Perfect Continuous uses had + been when talking about situations and actions that took a long period of time.
