This unit covered the various methods of evaluating students. Placement and Diagnostic tests were discussed as well as progress and end of term evaluations. Formal external examinations of language competency were also discussed; for example, the TOEFL, the IELTS, and the TOEIC. I learned that many institutions require the use of formal testing to evaluate student progress. I also learned that familiarizing myself with the various external examinations would be beneficial to lesson planning in cases where the students wish to or are required to take these exams.The Engage, Study, Activate approach to English as a Foreign Language learners is a very interesting approach. Because Exposure is one of the most important parts of learning a language this activate stage is placed at the end to highlight its necessity. In other lesson plan formats such as the AAA model, activate begins with apply at the end. This apply stage is to apply what they have learned, but because the concepts of language take longer to learn, I believe it is very beneficial for the activate to be approached as an activity to reinforce the use of language.
