Students need a good grasp of vocabulary, grammar, and functions to understand and use a language fully. Therefore, teachers need to teach their students in a balanced way and meet students at their specific levels. While some of the lessons will include all three facets of language, most lessons focus on only one. Grammar and vocabulary lessons can generally be taught in a more straightforward process, using 'straight arrow' ESA lessons to convey new grammar and vocabulary lessons. Lessons on functions can be more complex than a single grammar point or grouping of new vocabulary words and can be best taught using the 'boomerang' or 'patchwork' ESA lesson formats. Regardless of which type of lesson format teachers decide to use, the lessons must clearly convey meaning, usage, appropriateness and forms and patterns.
