This unit discusses testing and evaluating student's language skills. Different types of tests include placement tests, diagnostic tests, progress tests, and external exams. Placement tests are used to determine the student's language level to determine which class they should take. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests, but may be a bit more extensive within the language level to determine which subjects to review in more depth during class. Progress tests are used during class to periodically test the student's mastery of subjects covered. External exams are typically not given by language schools, but rather are tests given by third parties who developed the exams so that universities, employers, or others can have an evaluation of the language skills of a potential student or employee. External exams include TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIC, and the various Cambridge Assessments.
