In this unit, I have learned about the use of books and materials in the teaching of English namely , how useful are books and materials and the differences between authentic materials and created materials as well as their advantages and disadvantages. Course books have their advantages, the main one in my opinion being the fact that they have been tried and tested before publication. Using the book year after year will reinforce that point. Their main disadvantage centers around the point of flexibility in meeting the needs of students of different nationalities and their language depth levels. This is where the teacher has to make best use of the course book by omitting certain lessons that are not relevant to students, replacing unsuitable materials with more relevant materials, supplementing certain lessons with extra materials to reinforce certain points and finally by adapting his/her own style in teaching the course material. I have also learned ways to analyse a course book in terms of price, availability, design, methodology in terms of study and activity, skills with reference to reading, writing, speaking and listening, difficulty in terms of language level, syllabus coverage, its progression and review of previous lessons, topics relevance, teacher's guide and the availability of ancillary materials such as workbooks, audio cassettes, videos, CD ROMs etc.
