Differences between the English language and the student's native language can make learning productive skills more challenging. Accuracy and fluency are equally important, but the teacher ought to know when to focus activities on accuracy and when to focus on fluency. Preparing stimulating games and interesting topics can be helpful in encouraging students to improve their productive skills. Factors such as cultural issues, lack of confidence and fear of making mistakes can discourage students from participating in speaking activities. However, the teacher can address this with careful planning and giving students enough time to work on accuracy before fluency activities are introduced. Creative writing, such as poetry and stories, should also be encouraged, as it engages the students and allows them to input their own ideas resulting in a sense of pride in the work they produce.
