In the first lessons, it is very important that teachers establish rapport with students and set the tone for the rest of the course. We have two categories for these classes for example the existing group and the new groups. With new groups, the students don?t know each other and some work will be needed to establish rapport between the class members while with existing groups, students are likely to know be comfortable with each other and familiar with EFL teaching. In the first lesson, teachers shouldn?t focus on the course book but rather focus on activities that will establish rapport between the students, find out about the students, find out about the student?s aspirations and needs with the language and find out the English level of each individual member in the classroom. Students need warmers to motivate them to learn the language, therefore teachers should ensure that they keep their lessons alive by ensuring that before they start the lesson, students are given warmers in form of memory games, hangman, use of Pictionary and the use of tongue twisters.
