My school tends to use more created materials than course books in our English classrooms; therefore, I haven't had a lot of experience with using one course book for a class. In most cases, I'm pulling skills out of different course books that I find through research, etc., trying to create a balanced series of tasks to complete a whole lesson. The list of what to look for in a course book was beneficial, especially since I'm used to the school providing materials, and not students having to buy them themselves. So researching and finding the best course book possible is so important since the students are paying for it themselves. And, you are responsible for the purchase, so buying an inadequate book would be your mistake and yours alone. I try to use a lot of authentic materials as well, as I find they do motivate students more. They hate seeing a 1990 copyright and complain about how long ago that was and why are they being taught from \"old\" books.
