Lev Vygotsky’s theory developed the idea of social constructivism. He strongly believed that cognitive development was linked to socialization factors rather than passing through a series of stages, as described by Piaget. Applied to language learning Vygotsky’s ideas such as the ZPD have led to a number of important developments in language teaching.
