Receptive skills include reading and listening. We read and listen with different motives which are broken into having a purpose; to have an aim or reach a goal and for entertainment. Along with reading and listening our minds must recognize and process the words and understand the overall meaning and have previous knowledge. We read and listen with various techniques: scanning to get a specific idea, skim over the material to get a general understanding, prediction of the material from headlines or an introduction, deduct the context from words or phrases and in a focused manner to retrieve detailed information. Problems that arise with reading and listening can be in the text, the topic, the tasks the students must perform, word and sentence length or unfamiliar words. In helping language difficulty reading can be easier to absorb than listening. Teaching difficult language and structures prior to the reading or listening activity can be useful. Also, encouraging the students to understand the text but they don?t have know every word. The teacher should be aware of selecting different reading and listening materials such as authentic and non-authentic. Getting to know your students and picking interesting topics or topics that they like and creating interest through the engage stage will keep the students motivated. Teachers need to remember the importance of providing comprehension tasks will stimulate the understanding of the task. When teaching receptive skills, the teacher needs to find the balance when assigning tasks as they should not be to easy or too difficult.
