In this unit I learnt different ways of evaluating students? levels and progress. There are a few ways of assessing students? level: tutorials; evaluation by the students; tests. Tutorials can be conducted once a week to review how the work has been done, if there are any problems etc. Evaluation by the students can be conducted as a discussion with a students or a questionnaire. Students can be asked to whether they feel comfortable with the current lesson plan, what skills they would like to improve etc. Test is definitely an appropriative way to check students? knowledge because typically it allows to check all four skills. Tests can be the following: placement test; diagnostic test; progress test; practice test; proficiency test. Placement test assists to form a group of students of the same English level. This kind of test helps to check all the four skills and usually placement test is progressive which means it starts with simple questions and become more difficult gradually. Diagnostic test shows current student?s strengths and weaknesses and also helps the teacher to prepare lesson plans according to students? level and focus on their gaps in knowledge. Progress tests helps to check all four skills, it is usually conducted to elicit what language has been remembered and what language has been forgotten and often it?s required by the school. Practice tests are used for revision purposes and also to prepare to passing longer internal examinations or external tests. External proficiency tests contain 3 main categories: general English tests; business English tests; academic tests.
