This unit Teaching New Language drills down such aspects as vocabulary, grammar and functions. Before introducing new vocabulary a teacher should take into account such criteria as appropriacy to the students, appropriacy to the task, frequency and coverage and teachability. As to techniques of vocabulary teaching the unit says that on the Engage phase such methods as realia, mime and action, pictures, contrast, discussion, discovery are used to help engage the students. For the Study phase it?s appropriate to use gap-fill exercises, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, example sentences, pronunciation exercises such as drillings, study from texts and dialogues. The Activate stage of a vocabulary lesson may include such activities as ? open class, small group or pair discussion, role play, simulation, story building, material production task, debates. Also they give an ESA lesson sample of teaching a new vocabulary ? Straight Arrow ? Engage, Study, Activate. As to grammar there are techniques for presenting and practising language structures here: on the Engage phase these are ? discussion, scenario building, prompting, question and answer, using pictures, drawings, real objects, mime, etc. On the Study phase the teacher should apply intonation and pronunciation patterns, looking at the language in context through texts and dialogues, choral and individual repetition, gap fills, information gaps, sentence word order activities, sentence building. For the activate stage it?s appropriate to use communication games, role play, story building, discussion/debate. For teaching grammar a typical ESA patchwork lesson is given here: Engage ? Activate ? Study ? Activate ? Study ? Activate. As to teaching language functions which are as important as the previous two (vocabulary, grammar) a typical ESA boomerang lesson consists of: such order of phases as: Engage ? Activate ? Study ? Activate.
