Relationships between the student and teacher in a classroom are extremely important. Parts of the relationship, like the way one treats the other and the different characteristics and outside enthusiasms brought to the classroom can have an immense impact on how the student learns and absorbs information. Depending on the student and the circumstance of the classroom the teacher needs to be able to realize the different roles they have to play in order to convey their material to the student effectively. The teacher must be able to realize as well as go in and out of these roles as required by the student. But it is also beneficial to the learner if they can have some of the characteristics that make a good learner as well, in my opinion the most important of these is the desire to learn. If the student is in the class but doesn't think the material is useful or relates to anything why will they feel the need to absorb it? If the student doesn't want to learn or doesn't see the relevance to what your teaching them then that is a waste of both your own and their own time. Talking with your students and coming to a common understanding of what they want to learn and what they will be learning is a very important step.
