In this unit, we focused on how to best teach the receptive skills - listening and reading. We learned about when we use receptive skills (for a purpose and for entertainment) and we learned about the methods (predictive, scanning, skimming, detailed information, and deduction). This unit also taught us that o help students build confidence and engage their interest in learning listening and reading, we should teach them the unfamiliar yet essential vocabulary before listening/reading and give them interesting articles. However, we also need to teach students how to understand an article without understanding all the vocabulary. With my personal experience, some students get extremely intimidated when reading texts with a lot of unfamiliar words, so they give up altogether when they need to. To help them gain confidence, I will do a lot of \"deciphering\" games, exercises where you guess what a vocabulary word means with just the context.
