Why complete a TEFL courseWhen asked the question ‘Why complete a TEFL course?’ I could give a few reasons; now having completed the course for myself, it is clear that TEFL helps give you the tools to be the best teacher you can be. After taking TEFL you feel well prepared for the unique challenges of being an ESL teacher which is a job of diverse needs and skills. TEFL prepares its students to be able to put together an appropriate lesson for students of all levels in many different circumstances. As an ESL teacher we may work in many different environments and perhaps abroad in another culture. When put into an entirely new environment and put in front of a group of 40 students expected to teach instantly it is very over whelming! Having a TEFL course on your side takes the pressure off. From this course I have learned many techniques and skills that will make me a better teacher. TEFL teaches everything from how to begin a class on the first day at a new job with a welcoming smile and build rapport, to the importance of consistency in lessons and discipline inside the classroom. TEFL courses provide information on every type of situation in second language learning from Business english to young beginners. The resources provided for ESL teachers alone are an invaluable content of the TEFL experience. These materials come from experienced ESL teachers and they are activities proven to work well for all types of situations. In addition, as a native english teacher my students are often paying a lot of money for my time and knowledge and I want to be able to deliver the best lessons possible. english is an industry in many countries and given the investment from students the teacher’s should be invested too. Taking a TEFL course shows you are serious about the teaching profession and that you have the necessary skills to be an effective educator. Over and above the need to please the students and their parents, TEFL is an investment in your career. The pay scale in many jobs varies based on qualifications such as Undergraduate Degree all the way to Master’s Degrees. Having a TEFL course will increase your earning potential in a major way. In today’s competitive economy the extra certification works to set you apart from other applicants in teaching positions and gives TEFL certified ESL teachers an edge. With high interest among University graduates in ESL teaching aboard getting a good teaching position really requires some type of recognized teaching certification. Being TEFL certified is a great way to improve your resume when competing for english teaching jobs. These courses are accepted all over the world and are essential to having a good working knowledge of the english language. As native speakers of University level education we all have a good understanding of english grammar and conventions, but I have found that knowing what you should do and being able to explain why you do it are two very different things. TEFL gives an essential review of english grammar and tenses that all ESL teachers must master to teach effectively. Even though you know how to use it correctly, doesn’t mean that you can teach those tenses to others. The most important things learned in a TEFL course are how to actually deliver the information in a way that students will grasp. Lesson planning is an important skill to any future teacher. TEFL courses allow you to practice and hone your lesson planning skills with the help of a tutor or instructor. In TEFL students are taught to consider many things including what kind of problems might arise in our lessons and to think of ways to deal with those problems if they occur. This style of teaching is essential to learn to foresee problems in the classroom and be the most professional and effective teacher you can be. Overall, the TEFL experience is something that helps the future or current ESL teacher get a more complete understanding of english as well as what is expected in their job. It helps the learner become more confident in both our understanding of english and our ability to impart our knowledge to others. For these reasons I would strongly recommend taking a TEFL course to anyone interested in teaching abroad.
