I've learned about many aspects of teaching in general, let alone many strategies for teaching english as a foreign language. I've learned more about my own native language than I've even leaned in school, especially when it comes to grammar, parts of speech, and sentence structure. I've studied different tenses and parts of speech. I've understood better why we use certain parts of speech to convey ideas. On the more personal aspects of teaching, I’ve learned to focus on the frame of mind of the students and to consider the type of learning environment that certain assignments will promote. I look forward to being able to teach students the fundamentals of the language, and to be able to look at a classroom as a manageable entity rather than something to be overwhelmed by. The principles of TEFL, mainly the strategy to categorize activities as study/activate/engage, helps me look at activities for their value and what specific effects they are meant to have. I think the constant brainstorming of new activities in order to create lesson plans has helped me think more creatively about teaching, while still maintaining that structure is a positive and necessary thing, and that planning will be extremely helpful for an on-the-spot job like teaching.
