Why Teach ESL AbroadSome individuals seek experience, thrill, and excitement, while others are in search of a sense of accomplishment, to help others, or to collectively, as a whole, make an impact on a society. For whatever a person is in search of, teaching english abroad will remedy this search in ways that could change an individual’s outlook on other cultures, beliefs, background/lineage, education and style of living. There are substantial benefits that drive the final decision to teach abroad; such as, visiting another country, making money, gaining work experience, and learning a new language. These are all great reasons to influence one’s decision, but there are many other benefits. When you sign up to teach english as a Second Language (ESL) abroad, you sign a one-year contract. You are living, communicating, interacting, and working in a foreign country for one full year. You have endless opportunities to learn about a country’s holidays, festivals, events, and social highlights. You can attain knowledge of the society and everyday life through observation and participation. You will learn about generations past, their history and their progress. You will be immersed in pop-culture amongst the country’s youth while becoming part of their growth in education. Everything you obtain from your experience will bring a change; you will be more knowledgeable of the country you’re living in, you will have attained a unique set of skills to communicate with a foreign culture, and you will appreciate everything you will have learned. A lot of individuals choose to teach abroad mainly on the fact that they would not otherwise have the opportunity to travel. Some individuals attain a sense of adventure; the urge to see new places, meet new people, experience new things. It is through teaching abroad that you have the freedom to travel and to visit other countries and see new cultures. Throughout the school year, you have weekends to travel closer to your residency and you have breaks to travel to further destinations. Endless opportunities are opened up to you; you just need to take advantage of it. Another quality reason to teach english is to gain a sense of community amongst other international ESL teachers, your coworkers, your students and your neighbors. Throughout your experience, you will continuously be meeting new acquaintances, making life-long friends, and networking. The most significant advantage resulting from a trip to a foreign country would be the future relationships you will have gained. By gaining these relationships you are able to keep in touch with those individuals or groups you met during your travels. Above everything else, the most fulfilling benefit to teaching ESL is leaving after a year teaching contract with a sense of accomplishment. Within your teaching term, you are helping in the education of young learners, middle or high school students, or even perhaps adults. Most ESL classrooms have smaller volumes of students, allowing an increased level of teacher-student interaction. Students are able to receive more individual attention from their teacher in order to truly learn the english language to the highest potential. Throughout the year you will develop relationships with your students and peers. You will feel like you have made an impact in your student’s education, not only in the english language but also learning about your home country and culture. You will feel like you have made a difference and impacted the lives of others. To sum up all the reasons why an individual should teach ESL abroad: you will return home with invaluable international experience, new personal relationships, a copious amount of adventures, an accomplishing teaching experience, and a once in a lifetime experience you will take with you in the future.
