Lesson planningLesson planning I believe is the most valuable tool I have acquired while taking the TESOL course. Lesson planning is essential for a teacher as the teacher needs to be absolutely prepared for the lesson. In cases where the teachers run out of activities before the end of the class risks losing the respect of the students and appear very unprofessional to the students. Teachers need to always have more planned for the lesson than what they think is necessary to avoid these embarrassing circumstances. Teachers must also plan their lessons as to be interesting and retain the attention of the students. The classes need progress smoothly and teachers must find relevant ways in order to reach their students. Teachers must also take into account their student’s general similarities and universal interest while planning a lesson. Boring lessons are often times rendered ineffective and if the students are more concentrated on getting out of class than what is going on in class the teacher is failing to successfully reach them. Teachers should always consider the student’s general interest and attempt to find an activity that incorporates it into the lesson so that the students invest themselves more in the lesson and therefore maximize what they learn. Teachers should also attempt to avoid repetitive lessons in order to continue to engage the students. The lesson plans I have also learned need to follow certain structures be it and ESA, boomerang or patchwork order. These three should be employed in order to avoid repetitive lesson plans and keep the students motivated. The lesson plans in addition to variety and relevant issues or media need to have three fundamentally important stages. The engage stage is extremely important as it serves to capture the interests of the students. The engage stage is also a chance for the teacher to be creative as pictures, videos, dialogues, movies, or questions can be employed in this stage. The study stage is equally important but slight more rigid. In this stage the teacher explains to the student what they need to know be it through lecture, or by writing on a white board or chalk board. The students then have the chance to ask questions they may have and really get to understand the lesson, at least on paper. The activate stage is where the lesson comes full circle. The teacher needs to also be thoughtful when planning this fundamentally important stage as this is where the students need to be fully immersed in english. The teacher also has the chance to be creative in this stage as it allows for great diversity. Television interviews, dialogues resembling real life conversations, false meetings, and more can be used in order to have students employ the knowledge they have just attained. The activate stage should be designed so that the students would have to converse entirely in english and should be surrounded and immersed in that language in opposed to their native one. Lastly the TESOL course has also taught me that the students need to be the focus of the lesson and therefore should be included in the lesson planning process. The students need to dictate what is being learned and because of this the teacher should not only consider them but also have them decide and take role in the lessons.
