My first experience at teaching was being an english language assistant in France. Fresh out of college, I was totally unprepared to deal with classroom management/disruptions, creating my own lesson plans and essential grammar questions that students would randomly spring on me. The information that I learned during this course would have been immensely useful during those two years. When I took the job I figured all I needed to be able to do was speak english, but I was so wrong. As this TEFL course teaches use there is so much more to teaching english, than just speaking the language. I can now fully explain why a sentence is structured a particular way or in a particular tense then just saying “that’s just how you say it” and leave it up to their teacher to explain. I also feel more prepared to take on an actual teaching position, versus just being an assistant. Before there was no way I could have actually taught grammar to a class full of students. I’m not sure what the future holds for me, but I do know that if teaching english is in my future I’m prepared.
