The structure of the past tense is similar to the structure of the present tense. There are the simple, continuous, perfect and perfect continuous aspects in both. The past simple refers to an action that was completed at a definite time. The past perfect is used to show an action that was completed before another action happened. The past continuous is used to show an action that is progress at a certain time. The past perfect continuous is used to show duration of an action before another action in the past. It is useful to know the know the structure of the past tenses to help identify them. The continuous tenses use a main verb with the ing ending. The perfect tenses us a main verb with the past participle form. I think it might be somewhat difficult to clearly teach the difference usages of the past perfect and the past perfect continuous. I think I would need to review them before teaching them and have good examples to use.
