There are four past tenses: past simple, past progressive, past perfect, past perfect progressive. The past simple are actions completed at a definite time in the past. The past progressive are actions that are in progress at a past time. The past perfect is an action that began before another past action. The past perfect progressive is an action that began before a time in the past and continued up until that time. I learned that the verb ?be? is the only verb that has two forms according to person in the past. Also, the words ?after? and ?when? are words that signify a past action had completely finished before another action in the past started.
