This unit outlined the two receptive skills that we practice when learning a new language and it gave ways to practice those skills in the classroom. It's important use all 4 skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing) to create a balanced approach. However, it may happen that sometimes you will want to focus on a particular skill and then integrate the other skills into the lesson. This unit covered the two motives for reading and listening, which are: for a purpose and for entertainment. It also went over the ways that we read and listen. We can predict the content of a text or article from the headline, we can skim the text for a general idea, we can scan the text looking for specific information, we can read to understand every detail, or we can deduce meaning from the context.
