In this unit we learned that there are four basic skills in any language: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading and listening are receptive skills. Understanding reading or listening depends not only on our eyes and ears, but also on our knowledge of the world and the context of the reading and listening tasks. All skills are important, and there are several ways that teachers can facilitate learning for listening and reading. One method is to pre-teach difficult vocabulary. Another method is to try to interest students in the selected topic. Another important point is to select material that is not too easy or difficult for the students. Finally, there are various purposes for listening and reading, such as reading for pleasure, or listening for details.
