This unit covers the various aspects of the past tense in the English language. The four main aspects of past tense are simple past, past continuous, past perfect, and past perfect continuous. The past tense conjugation is similar to that of the present tense, but it can be confusing because of the number of irregular verbs in English and with the different ways past tense is used. Most verbs in English take an \"-ed\" or a \"-d\" at the end to make them past tense; however, there are a number of verbs that do not take those endings, such as \"buy\" to \"bought\" and \"go\" to \"went.\" These are called irregular verbs. Also, one must first understand when the action being described started and ended (if it, in fact, has) when deciding on which past tense to use.
