Unit 20 began by discussing what to do on the very first day of class. Basically, the teacher should start by establishing a rapport with the students, find out about the students themselves, find out the needs and aspirations of the students, and find out what level each student is at on the first day of class. The unit then goes on to touch on different problematic situations that may arise in a class. Such situations are having classes of varying English levels, large class sizes, use of native tongue in class, reluctant students, and difficulties with listening texts. The biggest lesson that I learnt from this unit is that day one of class should not be filled with grammar exercises, but should instead be more about learning about the students in class.
