There is a variety of methods and formats that have been used in TEFL, but the dominant one is ESA: Engage, Study, Activate. Each class or lesson should start with Engagement: eliciting student participation and involvement; followed by Study, in which key aspects of the lesson are explained and clarified and worked on; followed by Activation, in which students act out or interact to practice and demonstrate their understanding and language ability. Engagement activities often include introductions or word or alphabet recognition games; Study techniques can include matching pictures to words, gap fills, pronunciation exercises; Activation might include role plays, individual or joint productions (eg of ads or simulations).
