In this unit, I studied how to teach vocabulary, grammatical structures, and language functions. When teaching a new vocabulary item, it is important to teach the term's meaning, use, word grammar, interactions with other words, spelling, and pronunciation. As for grammatical structures, meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the differences between spoken and written forms are important. Language functions include areas such as requesting, suggesting, inviting, etc. Generally, straight arrow ESA lessons tend to work well for teaching vocabulary and grammatical structures, whereas in teaching language functions - which stress the need for language activation - boomerang and patchwork ESA lessons tend to be more effective.
