I prefer to work in a government school when I teach abroad, so I found the tips in this unit for dealing with large classes and reluctant students to be the most relevant and useful. I aim to give ample attention to each student, though in a class of potentially 40 students this may be difficult. I imagine large classes might also make it easier for reluctant students to fall behind. In addition to giving clear instruction, some suggestions for large classes include worksheets, pair and group work, choral repetition, use of varied activities and topics, and appointing group leaders to help manage the class. Ideas for involving reluctant students include pair work, role-play, tape recorders, and controlled practice.
