This unit reviews the structure and usage of the five most common conditionals that are used for ESL teaching and, together with the accompanying video, has some suggestions for how to teach these. The unit also reviewed how to change direct into reported speech, and placed particular emphasis on backshifting the tenses used and altering pronouns and time and place words as necessary. For me the table for changing direct to reported tenses was extremely useful, as once the tense of the direct speech is identified, the correct reported speech tense can easily be applied. For both sections, it was emphasized that a step by step approach should be taken so that each teaching point was thoroughly understood.
