As a new teacher of ESL (and new teacher in general), the use of coursebooks would be a huge advantage to both me and my students, as it would provide me with the guidance and confidence and also provide the students with a greater chance of success. Having said that, however, I would not use it blankly, but apply a critical mind to what is and what isn't relevant, and see what I could add to it. As a current student of another language, I have experienced the many disadvantages of what I refer to as a \"scripted\" lesson - the teacher is too focused on following a specific lesson plan that she is not deciphering how the students are reacting to the language and where there is room for improvement.
