Much of the classroom experience is environmental, and the space and manner of the classroom can greatly impact a student's responsiveness and success. My experience has shown that students who feel valued, encouraged in a safe manner, humored, and challenged will produce greater results and be more motivated than students who don't feel this way. Further, building trust between the student and the teacher, as well as among the students, fosters an environment that is creative and conducive to learning.
Further, putting the time in to preparing the lesson, with attention to detail on small items (instructional word choice) will have a great impact on a students ability to engage and retain.
