Methods of teaching English exist in a wide variety of forms. Through the centuries, teaching English took on different ideas or theories (such as behavioral or constructivist theories). The relationship of teacher and student also varies in the different methods. In the silent way, the teacher is far removed from the student. In the suggestopaedia method, the teacher acts like a parent while the student acts as the child. Different methods also have different techniques. The grammar-translation method is based on direct translation which relies on the common grammar of the students native language and the English language. The audio - lingualism method depends on drill exercises. Jeremy Harmer developed the ESA method which is currently used by new teachers and taught in this course. This method takes the best elements of previous theories to create a more wholesome experience where the student is exposed to English, has opportunity to communicate and experiment with it, and remains motivated. ESA is flexible to different forms to fit the target lesson and student level. Elicitation, feedback, and corrections are given in different stages at appropriate times in a manner sensitive to students and the culture.
