The unit lists the pro's and con's of authentic and created materials, and the usage of course books, and how they may be utilised in the classroom. whilst authentic materials provide real-world experience, they may be intimidating for beginner students. On the other hand, whilst created materials can be geared towards a specific group or purpose, they can be uninteresting and lead to a reduction in interest. Course books, whilst providing a structured syllabus, can be too general for a teacher who needs to focus on a specific area, or group. The unit focuses on how best to utilise the different kinds of course materials, and its my understanding that a well-planned mix might be the best approach to maintain interest and enthusiasm, whilst giving the teacher a guide to planning future lessons. furthermore, although native english speakers have a fantastic grasp of the language, the finer points of grammar etc may not be easy to remember and the course books can provide a refresher on how best to teach those finer points.
