There are four basic skills in any language: receptive skills that are reading and listening, productive skills that are writing and speaking. All are equally important. Reading and listening basically can be either for a purpose or for entertainment. Some special skills are needed for reading and listening, and understanding of the context will depend on readers and listeners' expertise in these areas: predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, deduction from context. Pre-teaching the vocabulary that students may not know, and choosing the compatible texts and topics will improve the chance of students learning.
