This unit describes the criteria by which teachers analyze and choose course books, if they use them. It details the advantages and disadvantages of course books. Some disadvantages include the fact that books tell the teacher what is to be taught rather than allowing the teacher to cater to the actual needs of the class; another is that it makes lessons rather predictable; yet another is that teachers may frequently fall back on using only what the book provides and rarely supplementing with fresh materials and topics. The unit states that teachers shouldn't use the book for every part of the lesson. Some advantages of using a course book include the fact that it's much more convenient to have those materials provided and a time-tested syllabus for use. Another advantage is that it ensures most skills will be used about equally. The unit suggests the kinds of perks and flaws of course books in general.
