For any language, there are four basic skills - reading, listening, speaking and writing. Reading and listening are receptive skills. Students will receive information or pleasure by practicing these skills through a medium such as a newspaper, novel, radio, etc. Speaking and writing are called productive skills. Students must practice what they learned or already know and relay information to their friends or the audience. However, there are often problems that prohibit or hinder students learning these skills. Some examples include sentence length, word length and number of unfamiliar words. To prevent these problems, it is important to spark interests in students, select material carefully, and vary the material to make sure that every student has been catered to.
