Most language schools use placement tests to evaluate student's level before he starts a course at the school. It is usually a written, multiple choice question test which often contains one or a few descriptive questions. This kind of test together with a conversation with a teacher can be an effective way of accurate assessing the student's language level and skills, as well as his interests and motivation. This helps to place the student in a right class. Other kind of test are diagnostic ones. They are often similar to placement tests but may be more extensive. They help the teacher to evaluate student's strengths and weaknesses, to know which aspects he needs to improve and to prepare the proper material for future lessons. Progress tests are taken on a regular basis (e.g. every 10 lessons, at the end of each unit) and should examine all of four language skills (listening, writing, speaking and reading) and should include the material from a certain period of time.
