This unit was more brief than most, but contains good information and examples of different resources and materials that could be used in an English classroom. Course books often have a stigma about them and many teachers dislike the idea of using a course book, while other teachers swear by them. There are many positive advantages to using course books, such as offering new ideas to inexperienced teachers and providing a good balance of exercises in grammar, vocabulary, and writing skills. Some disadvantages of using course books are that the students may not like the book or enjoy working in the book and the students may feel as if the book were too predictable and boring. The unit explains that many good teachers utilize the course books for certain things, but adapt them as necessary for each individual class. Being new to teaching English, I do feel more inclined to use a course book, but my personality is much more inclined to interact more with the students in games and group activities. Authentic materials like newspapers, magazines, and advertisements are also great tools to use for many activities and they can often help students to feel more confident as they learn to understand them more, though they may intimidate beginners.
