This unit covered the basics of pronunciation and phonology. The part on pronunciation discussed intonation, stress, sound joining and linked speech, and gave clear examples of each. The part on intonation and stress was particularly interesting, as this is something I am often asked about, and native English speakers do not usually think about, so explaining it can be difficult. The next part explained the phonetic alphabet, something I would like to see used more in the ESL classroom. The alphabet is capable of depicting every sound in English, so it is a useful tool for teaching pronunciation. In fact, I see it is used in the textbooks I use, but the students are never taught how to read it, and few of my teachers are capable of using it. Instead, I often use diagrams and my own mouth to teach the same sound multiple times, where teaching it alongside the appropriate IPA symbol would help with retaining it. In saying that, the section following on articulation was a very helpful refresher, and no doubt useful for all ESL teachers.
