It was good to think about the role of authentic material in the classroom. It had never occurred to me that authentic material would be more interesting to the student. I don't know why I never thought of that. The example of the TV guide was especially interesting as it pointed out that it would have several different class level applications depending on how you used the material. This is a good challenge for me to examine authentic materials from several points of view! The most enjoyable unit so far: informative, tricky and fun. I knew about intonation and stress but nothing about the principles and manner of articulating speech. I found the practical application really helpful. For example, saying the words ?bat? and ?pat? and feeling with my hand on my throat the difference between a voiced and unvoiced sound. I also have never been exposed to the phonemic alphabet, so the phonemic symbols and transcribing task were eye-openers.
