This lesson focused on the productive skills of speaking and writing to communicate effectively. I learned that there are many complexities that must be understood when trying to teach students whose first language is not English. Difficulties may arise because of similarities in the pronunciation of English words that sound the same but may be spelled differently, or because of misunderstanding of the rules for proper punctuation. The difference between accuracy and fluency was a very important distinction for me to learn. There are a number of potential problems with language learning which can be predicted and an appropriate response can be prepared. First lessons should not go by the textbook but should include warmers and rapport building. Activities that open students up, get them involved and make them feel comfortable are the best. Examples of this include: needs assessment, pass the ball, questionnaires, surveys, hangman, Pictionary and memory games. Other considerations are class size, differing ability levels and reluctant learners.
