Modal auxiliary verbs add meaning or conditions to a verb, often expressing possibility, ability, or obligation. The kind of modal verb used can vary for a number of reasons, often to indicate formality or politeness. The two voices used in English are passive or active, active indicates focus being on the doer of the action in the sentence. In the passive voice, the focus is not on the doer of the action, commonly because it is not known or not important who did the action. Defining relative clause means the clause is essential information to the sentence; non-defining is not essential information. A phrasal verb is a verb + a preposition and/or an adverb.
