It is necessary to conduct assessments before students enter into your classroom or learning centre to gauge their language competency level and to see what method of teaching is suitable for them. This can be done through an initial placement test, that consists of spoken and written components as well as checking their knowledge and vocabulary and communications skills. In greater detail are diagnostic tests that focus more on what the students know, so lessons and materials can planned around their existing knowledge and to really see what difficulties they may have. For consistent updates on students, there's progress tests. These are conducted regularly to see what the students are finding difficult, and to see what learning has been retained. I conduct these progress assessments often, because I have young learners, they absorb things quickly (generally) and I want to expose them to more challenging language (at an appropriate speed), so I want to check in to see what they've really learnt and can apply.
