Teaching reluctant students can be difficult, but I learnt some techniques in this chapter that can help. By using role plays and pair work, the focus on them personally is less and they can feel safer to try and participate. In a class of varying strengths, the stronger students can be given harder variations of the work and extra activities to keep the pace of the class consistent with the slower students.
I start every class with something fun and engaging that stimulates the students curiousity and attention, whether its a magic trick for the younger learners or more relevant topic conversations for the older students.
With first time classes, there is no rush to get straight into the books. It is more beneficial to ease the students into the new atmosphere and let them find belonging with fellow students, this can be helped with games and role play/discussion time. For the adult learners its the best time to conduct a needs analysis with them, to see what their needs are for the class.
