This unit covers the basics of teaching receptive skills which are listening and reading.
The process of learning a new language involves listening followed by speaking (utterances) followed by reading and then writing. This process covers the skills that a teacher would try to teach to students learning a foreign language. These skills are known as receptive and productive skills. Receptive being listening and reading and productive being writing and speaking.
Obviously as a teacher we need to be aware of the reading material presented to students as well as the listening material and take note of the language and vocabulary. Another important factor is to ensure the students are engaged as this will motivate them to learn and help grasp the language better. Planning lessons around the students’ interests is key to keeping them engaged and interested in the topic. Using different mediums in the lesson such as pictures, videos will also help keep the lessons interesting.
